What is ozone?
It is an unstable form of oxygen with three oxygen atoms instead of two. Ozone is known to be formed in nature during thunderstorms, so when you are outdoors in the aftermath of a thunderstorm you can smell its refreshing aroma. In most countries of the world, including Georgia, ozonization is used in household and industry for purification of air, water in swimming pools and other liquids.
Mechanism of ozone action
The third oxygen atom in the O3 molecule is loosely held by two other atoms, detaches and actively combines with bacteria, fungi of various kinds, viruses and any other microorganisms. This process is called oxidation. As a consequence of oxidation of the shell, microorganisms are left without nutrition and protection, so they die. For this reason, ozone is a powerful disinfectant. After the treatment process, virtually no harmful chemical residues remain, except for oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Ozone is a powerful oxidizing and disinfecting agent, naturally destroying harmful microorganisms and compounds by oxidizing them. Oxidation occurs when ozone molecules collide with oxidizing substances, including microorganisms (viruses, mold and bacteria), organic and inorganic materials (iron and manganese). Upon contact with ozone in microorganisms, the outer membranes of the cell walls rupture (lysate), destroying the microorganisms or are inactivated through oxidation. Oxidation generally hydrolyzes inorganic molecules, rendering them insoluble and facilitating their physical removal.
Ozone technologies and solutions are used in various domestic, agricultural, commercial, logistics and industrial applications.
